Quay crane

The quay crane is a rail-mounted or rubber-tyred crane installed on the container berth to move containers from the containership to the stacking yard. The container berth is a designated area alongside the quay where containership load and discharge containers.

Typically, the quay crane is a rope-hoisting ,rope-traversing crane which operates by lifting the container  (hoisting) and moving it along trolley (trolleying) before lowering into position. The quay crane moves along the length of the container berth. It is equipped with spreader beam which attaches to the corner castings of the container to enable it to be lifted.
